Steve Visits on Easter Weekend

After finishing up two weeks of March Break, I came back to 3.5 days of work and then it was Easter long weekend!

On Good Friday, Sara and I made our second ever trip to Bowen Island.  We had front row seats in the ferry, beautiful day and beautiful view.

It was a short ferry ride.  When we arrived on Bowen, we took a different path from last time we visited.  We found a cute little lagoon, looped back into town, ate lunch at The Village Baker, then hiked up a hill to Artisan Square.

We didn't even realize it existed! Great find - lots of neat little art shops.  I bought some chocolate ice cream at Chocolate Cafe and then we wandered some more until we found a lovely residential zone on our way down the hill from Artisan Square.  The houses were gorgeous - all different, and all looked pretty new.  Many were quite large and had amazing views of the mountains and water.  We'd arrived at Bowen at 11:20, and by now it was 1:40.  We were pretty tired from all the walking, so we just headed back to the ferry pickup.  Sat around admiring the view, went to a coffee shop until it was time to return.

On Saturday, we did the usual weekend chores before meeting Steve and his friend Dave at Esso Avitat, part of Vancouver airport.  They'd flown a CT-155 Hawk from Seattle.

We had a nice dinner on the patio overlooking the water at The Flying Beaver.  After dinner, we dropped Dave off at his hotel downtown and then headed back to our place with Steve.  Sara took a phone call with her mom which lasted awhile; Steve and I watched a boring DVD during that time (a retirement roast for one of my colleagues).

Sunday the three of us still had the Zipcar that Sara and I rented the previous day to meet Steve at the airport.  During breakfast, we decided to drive out to Point Roberts.  I've wanted to go for awhile, and I thought of it when Steve mentioned flying over Point Roberts on his way in yesterday.  Point Roberts is ~45 minutes from where we live.  The cool thing is that Point Roberts is entirely surrounded by water or Canada - not attached to the US by land and yet is technically part of Washington state.

Sunday morning breakfast

We packed some snacks, and drove out to PR.  There is a full border crossing (even though PR is less than 5 sq. miles).  We drove around the perimeter of PR, and walked around Lighthouse Marine Park which had gorgeous views of mountains - we could see many more mountains than when we're in Vancouver.  At one point, we decided to look for the town - until we realized there really wasn't one apart from a few gas stations, some shipping receiving signs, a hardware store, and a grocery store.

It was approaching time to return our rental, so we drove back and dropped the Zipcar at 13th and Granville in South Granville.  From there, we walked all the way to Gastown which Steve had never seen before.  Near the end of Gastown we were attracted by what looked like some sort of festival from a distance - as we walked through the crowed, we realized it was a street garage sale of used items, attended by downtown eastside residents.  From there, we found ourselves a block from Main + Hastings.  We kept going through to China Town, then grabbed a bus to Kits Beach.

On Kits Beach, we sat at a picnic table to eat the rest of our food.  We played a game of Boggle (yay!). Steve was ready to go home after that.  Our bus tickets had just expired, so Steve and I Car2Go'd home while Sara took a bus (we thought this might be the most economical way to get home given you can only fit 2 in a Car2Go).

(Is Sunday still going?)  We ate a Thanksgiving Dinner with the boarders. The kitchen staff had arranged the tables in a giant square so all ~40 of us felt like we were eating together.  The dinner (and dessert) was delicious!  After dinner, Steve, Sara, and I played Monopoly City.  We had to read the rules since the game is quite different from classic Monopoly.  We started the game just after 7PM and didn't finish until 10:30!! It was a loooong game (if you must know, I won. My strategy?  roll well and pick up good Chance cards)

So that's been our Easter Weekend so far.  Steve will be heading out tomorrow (Monday) back to Moosejaw, SK.

Exploring Steveston

On Saturday, Sara and I explored Steveston, a historic fishing town a 30 minute drive outside Vancouver.  It'd been recommended to us by a few people so we were excited to finally getting around to seeing it.  I'm on March Break and since we're not travelling we both thought it would be good to explore a little.

A bus, a sky train, and another bus later, we had arrived in Steveston. We explored a nice set of shops, starting with Serendipity's backyard where we picked up a few bees wax candles.

We explored the boardwalk and looked at fishing boats before stopping at a nice place for brunch.

After brunch we explored the old cannery.
And then discovered the beautiful Gary Point park.  Highly recommended for just walking around, playing on the beach, flying a kite, walking a dog,...

Gary Point Park

Gary Point Park

It was fairly windy in Gary Point, so we decided it was time to head home.  On the bus ride, we listened to "Never be Sick Again" - an audio book I downloaded haphazardly when I was trying to figure out how to download audio books from the Vancouver Public Library onto my Galaxy Nexus (phone).  The book is sorta crazy, the author talks about all sorts of harmful health risks in our foods and environment.  Well, when we finally got back home (after another 3 busses) we decided to go grocery shopping.  Maybe you can see some of the author's influence on our selection (every product is 100% organic):
Although to be honest, he wouldn't approve of the milk (don't drink milk), the bananas (only eat fruit that is in season locally), the granola bars or soup (don't eat packaged foods), the cereal (don't eat cereal).  He also wouldn't like that some of the food is in plastic.  Oh, and if you eat the fruit, make sure you don't eat any other food with it.  And if you eat carbs, remember not to eat protein with it.  Oh, and don't drink tap water - it's poisoned.

After a dinner of (perogies and broccoli), we watched Star Trek:

All in all, a great day.  Loved Steveston - and certainly want to visit again soon.

Happy 2 Year Anniversary!

Well it is one year later, and I am feeling guilty for having neglected this blog for so long.  Without dwelling on the time between, here are some recent events:

The Naam

This restaurant came highly recommended by my parents who used to come here prior to my existence here on Earth.  We went here for our 2 year wedding anniversary.  Eclectic menu and relaxed atmosphere with live music.

Tofino
One week after our anniversary, we were off to Ucluelet and Tofino for a 4-day vacation with our friend Steve and his girlfriend Julie.  We had a great time, even though the weather wasn't all that nice.  It was sunny for our first day, then rainy the next three including two very wet nights camping!

Julie brought a fun game called Rukshuk that we played before heading to Tofino.  Sara was a pretty good builder.
Waiting for the Ferry to depart at Tsawwassen.

On the road to Ucluelet after taking the ferry to Nanaimo.

We passed lots of logging trucks on our drive through Vancouver Island.

The view from the backyard of the Blackrock Hotel in Ucluelet

Surfing lesson!  None of us did all that well...

Natural Hot Springs!! The water was hot like a hot tub, every now and then cold waves from the Pacific Ocean would pour in and splash us
Orcas! On the boat ride to and from the Hot Springs we saw over a dozen whales including Gray, Orca, and Humpback.  On our trip, we also saw sea lions, an otter, jelly fish, and sea stars.

More orcas!

We took a 2.5 hour kayak tour.  It was Julie's and my first time kayaking.

Vancouver Island has really big trees! We hiked the Rain Forest trail and a few others.

Happy 1 Year Anniversary Uncle Rob and Aunt Sara!

3 days after I broke my arm, we had planned to fly back to Toronto to visit with our families. Luckily, the doctors gave me the okay and we went ahead with our vacation as planned (though sometimes not as comfortable or pain-free for me as I would have liked).

We spent our first weekend back in Peterborough with my mom's family. They took us for an amazing dinner to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. We went to the golf club where my step-dad Martin has served as Treasurer and was President of the club this past year. Delicious food and wonderful service. Everyone was especially respectful of "Mr. West" as soon as we walked through the doors. Oh yeah, and they were also kind enough to cut up and serve the top layer of our wedding cake that Rob's mom had saved for us for just this occasion.
Mr. West (Marty), w/ his sister (my aunt Cathy), and nephew (my cousin Ryan).

Delicious cake served up on well decorated plates (way nicer presentation than we expected).

1/2 of the packaging the cake was wrapped in.

While in Peterborough, Rob even got to help install a new dock for my family. I was not up for that kind of excitement less than a week after my injury, so I just napped and took some photos.

Next, it was back to Toronto to await the arrival of our first niece or nephew, due Tuesday June 29. We had dinner with soon-to-be parents Jon (Rob's brother) and Chab on Monday June 28. Chab was looking great, had lots of energy, and was still playing gracious host to us and her parents. She went into labour as she was getting ready to go to the opera on the evening of June 29 and spent that night in the hospital. Just before 8 am on June 30 (Wednesday) our beautiful little nephew, Sunny, was born at a healthy 7 lbs 4 oz.

LOVE this picture of the happy new family, at home on day 1

After much excitement over the new baby, we were still able to celebrate with family on the actual day of our anniversary (July 4, 2010). We had brunch with my dad, Naomi, and Rob's parents. Then checked into a fancy hotel (Le Germaine - highly recommended!) and went to a nice dinner just the 2 of us.

My main course - rainbow trout, cooked & presented amazingly

While debating over whether to get dessert, the chef decided to bring us this dessert platter for free!!! It was beautiful & delicious.

Mmmm...dessert.

Chocolate-covered cheesecake popsicle.

The whirlwind came to an end with us both flying back to Vancouver (rather than Rob staying in Ontario, he decided to fly back to take care of me...isn't he sweet!!), happy to have gotten to meet our nephew, spent so much time with Mommy Chab and Daddy Job (thanks guys!), eaten our special cake, and celebrated our anniversary with our families.
